EPA Inter-Regional Qualifiers Round-Up

The glistening Brecon Canal provided the glorious backdrop to a sun-drenched Brecon Petanque Club piste on Sunday as the EPA Inter-Regional Qualifiers were played in South Powys.

Eight teams played in a 7-match round-robin to determine Wales’ rankings for September’s Inter-Regional Championships in Hayling Island, with eight different Clubs represented on the day.

The winning team was “Triple H”, who won six of their seven games with a points difference of +24. The team was made up of Penarth Petanque Club’s brothers Andrew and Tim Howard with Huw Morris of PILCS Petanque Club in outstanding pointing form. Penarth’s Will Thomas also played in the final two wins of the day, having only landed back in Gatwick from Corsica in the mid-morning.

“The Helmets” team from Caerleon of Paul and Alison Gregory with Paul Mayfield finished in second with five wins from seven and the Warriors team of Len Field, Jeremy Clare (both Maesteg), Gay Evans and Dan Murphy (both Cardiff Bay) claimed third.

Whilst Caerleon’s Ian Wheeler, Mike North and Dai Bevan finished in eighth, despite their excellent performance in Scotland last weekend.

An enjoyable day was had by all as ratified by Penarth Petanque Club captain Tim Howard who said; “Thank you to Brecon Petanque Club for hosting a wonderful day. It was my first time at the club and we have already planned a friendly with Jim and the club later in the season. Thanks also to the Welsh Petanque Association for administering a very enjoyable day’s petanque and for organising such wonderful weather too!”
