Penarth Pendragons capped a fine season by lifting the WPA Cup at Monkstone Pétanque Club in Penylan on Sunday.

Having already gained promotion from division 2, the Pendragons were hoping to conclude the season with some silverware, but were left frustrated when they had to sit out of the morning session, as their opponents failed to show, meaning Valerie Falconer who was scheduled to play in the semi-final, missed out on playing all day.

In the other semi-final, The Wheatsheaf finished strongly against Cregiau Jacques to progress to the Final, courtesy of a 3-1 win, despite losing the opening game.

In the Final, Penarth developed a 2-0 lead with captain Tim Howard and Will Thomas beating Colin Sweet and Alan Evans 13-8; whilst on the adjacent piste Andew Howard (brother of Tim) and Dan Caunt beat Basil White and Simon Herbert by the same scoreline.

In the reverse ties; the Pendragons victory was confirmed when Andrew Howard and Caunt claimed a 13-7 victory over Sweet and Evans, before Tim Howard and Thomas made it a 4-0 clean sweep moments later.

The Plate competition was also played on a changeable day for weather, which led to saturated pistes by the end of the day, but it was division 1 side, Isca Romans who claimed the Title.

Despite there being two divisions between the clubs this season, the Final against new team Maesteg who won division 3, was always going to be difficult. Isca’s team of Tansy Mayfield, Richard Harris, Paul Gergory and Alison Gregory were too strong in the end for Len Field, Jeremy Clare, Kevin Edwards and teenager Matthew Clare.

A special mention to the organiser of the competition Vicky Adshead and to Monsktone Petanque Club for hosting the event so well once again.
