WPA Senior Qualifiers - Top Eight |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The top eight competition was held at Pentwyn Leisure Centre on Sunday 10th May in perfect weather conditions. The Top eight teams played off in a seeded play-off based upon their final ranking after Grand Prix 4, and it was the best of three games. The first round saw PIDG play Abergavenny Reds and Monkstone play the Toppers. PIDG won their match in two games, however, Monkstone took the three games to beat the Toppers in a very tense match. The second round saw PIDG play Monkstone and Abergavenny Reds play the Toppers. Both the Monkstone and the Toppers won in two games. The play-off for the bottom four teams saw Front Row play Caerleon Helmets and Raiders play Dischromatics. Caerleon Helmets lost their first match to Front Row but pulled themselves together to win the next two games. Dischromatics lost in two games to the Raiders after having a good lead in the first match, but failed to polish their opponents off. The second round saw the Caerleon Helmets play the Raiders and Front Row play Dischromatics. Caerleon Helmets finished of the Radiers in two games, however, it took Dischromatics three games to tackle the Front Row. Congratulations to all the teams that took part in the Top 8 and ultimately made it a successful competition.

Ladies Qualifier |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Four ladies triples teams took part to find the triples team that will be invited to attend the Ladies World Championships later in the year. This year Thailand is hosting the Championships between 13th to 15th November in Suphanburi. The Ladies Qualifier was hosted by the Wheatsheaf Petanque Club in what can only be described as very, very, very wet with very, very, very occasional sunshine. In the morning the four team played a round-robin to obtain a seeding, then after a fine lunch cooked by that world famous Chef M. Jake de Caston, the teams took to the piste in a seeded round-robin. At the half way mark there was very little in the competition, three teams could have taken the prize, however, the afternoon session slowly provided a winner, but not until the last game was almost over! The winners were The Hustlers comprising Gemma Foster (Wheatsheaf PC), Berengere Demay (Abergavenny PC) and Gill Brace (Wheatsheaf PC).
The following teams took part: The Hustlers (Above): Gill Brace (Wheatsheaf PC), Gemma Foster (Wheatsheaf PC) and Berengere Demay (Abergavenny PC) . Organiser: John Legge |

Celtic Challenge Competition |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
On Sunday 11th October saw the Celtic Challenge Qualifier take place at the 2010 venue, Wenvoe Petanque Club. 22 teams to up the challenge to play for the 8 places available which are equally split between Wales A and Wales B. After a wet morning and a sunnier afternoon, the following teams qualified. Wales A
Wales B
The WPA wish all the team the best of luck for the 2010 Celtic Challenge being hosted by the Wenvoe Petanque Club here in Wales. The Frankfield Petanque Club, Cork hosted a very successful 2009 Celtic Challenge over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd May. Wales for the third year running has won the Celtic Challenge with 29 wins, Ireland A 2nd with 28 wins, Scotland 3rd with 27 wins and Ireland B 4th with 21 wins. The WPA would like to thank the IPA and especially Sue (Tournament Director) and Jim Ryan for their hospitality at Frankfield Petanque Club. It was not an easy competition, after the first day Ireland A were in the lead with 17 wins, Wales second with 13 wins, Scotland third with 12 wins and Ireland B trailing with 6 wins. At this point we realised that we had to come out on the Sunday to take as many games off Ireland B then A to have any chance of retaining the trophy. Sunday morning started with Wales dropping a further two games to Ireland B which meant that both Ireland A and Wales beat Ireland B 12/4, which meant that Wales had to better Scotland's 6 wins over Ireland A and also Ireland B took more games from Scotland that both Ireland A and Wales, at all order there! The first round against Ireland A didn't go well for Wales loosing three out of the four matches, however, after a hearty lunch of toasties and pints of Beamish Wales came out all cylinders firing and won the next two rounds without dropping a game. The last round saw Wales only winning one of the matches, it should have been three! WAS IT ENOUGH? Scotland looked as though they were on their way to victory over Ireland B and the competition when in the last round Ireland B fought back to take two vital wins - certain members of the Welsh team were cheering for Ireland B, they will remain nameless. YES! Ireland A v Ireland B - 12/4 Celtic Challenge Best Triple was Scotland 2 - Robbie Stronach, Johnny Wilson and Lynn Jenkins. Ireland - Ireland 2 - Jackie Broderick, Jim Ryan and Tom O'Keeffe.
The 2010 Celtic Challenge will be hosted on behalf of the WPA by Wenvoe Petanque Club on the weekend of 1st and 2nd of May 2010, the club is very excited about hosting this competition and have already made a great start in their preparations. The Celtic Challenge Qualifier has been moved from the beginning of August to the 11th October to take pressure off the playing calendar due to the Home Nations and probable invitations for qualifying players. |

Affiliated League Competitions |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The annual League Competition is very popular amongst the clubs in South Wales, each year the competition is fierce to win the respective league and where possible gain promotion to the next division. Even though there is a competitive element to these games the atmosphere is friendly and enjoyable, weather permitting. This league is currently the only one affiliated to the WPA, however, there is the BIG (Boules in Gwent) League which is run by a small dedicated committee, should you require further information on the BIG League, please contact us and we can put you in touch with the organisers. 2009 Division One Fixtures & Results 2009 Division Two Fixtures & Results 2009 Division Three Fixtures & Results - No Division 3 in 2009 Season Follow this link to read the rules for the WPA League Competition. |

League Cup Competition |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The League cup Competition runs parallel to the League competition and adds another dimension to the playing season. Teams playing in the League do not have to play in the League Cup, but it's well worth it. It's our equivalent to the FA Cup!
