The 2024 Home Nations Qualifier recently took place at the Monkstone Petanque Club. The Executive would like to thank the committee and members for allowing the WPA to use their facilities.
Two teams with no wins in the morning ranking phase played an additional elimination game to determine who progressed to the main competition in 8th place. Derek Jones’ team edged Phil Freegard’s team out of the competition to take the final spot.
After lunch, the ranking phase of the competition took place, using a complete elimination format to determine the team’s final ranking.
Derek Jones’ team, which had to play the elimination round, came through in the quarter-final stage to win 13/12 against Tony Smith’s team, which was a real turn-around in fortune. Another tight game was between Tony Smith’s team, ranked 1, and Dan Rawlings’ team, ranked 2, fighting for 5th and 6th place. After a game in which the lead continued to swap, Tony Smith’s team managed to win 13/12 and take the 5th placed position. |
