Welsh Petanque Association - Advanced Skills Award Scheme

BRONZE

 

In order to pass this award participants will need to attempt all the activities and must achieve a score of at least 6 out of 12 in every activity.

Practical Activities

  1. Demonstrate that you can hit a boule without dropping short, using a soft looping shooting method to hit a boule that is placed 50 cm behind another boule at the minimum distance for your age.
  2. To hit the middle boule out of 3 that are positioned side by side with a gap of 10 cm between each of them. The boule will be placed at the 6m, 7m and 8 m. away from the circle.
  3. To be able to point a boule from a squatting position to within 50 cm of a Jack placed at 6m.
  4. Demonstrate that you can throw a Jack to within a circle of 75 cm in diameter.
  5. Demonstrate that you can point a boule to within a circle of 50 cm in diameter whereby the examiner is responsible for ensuring that the distance at which a boule is pointed to is varied at least 3 times.
  6. To play as a double a complete game of Petanque adhering strictly to the International Rules of Petanque utilizing all the shots performed in this award. Candidates will pass this exercise providing that they have showed to the examiner that they have worked tactically as a team. This task must be completed to the satisfaction of the examiner.

Knowledge of Petanque

  1. Explain what is meant by and then give an example of when it would be appropriate to use the following terms:
    a) Promoting a boule.
    b) Lobbing a boule.
  2. Inform the examiner of the answers to the following rules:
    a) How far a circle and Jack must be from a boundary at the start of an end.
  3. What are the three rulings if the two closest boules to the Jack are from opposing teams?

SILVER

 

In order to pass this award participants will need to attempt all the activities and must achieve a score of at least 6 out of 12 in every activity.

Practical Activities

  1. Demonstrate that you can lob a boule over a rope that is positioned at least 3m above the ground consistently into a circle that is 2m in diameter placed at the minimum distance.
  2. Demonstrate that you can promote a boule by landing no more than 50 cm in front of a boule and bring both boules to within a 50 cm radius circle, of the Jack at the minimum distance.
  3. Demonstrate that you can lob using the correct throwing method over a rope which is 3m above the ground landing the boule in a circle that is 1 m in diameter placed at the minimum distance. The boule must remain inside the circle in order for the boule to score.
  4. Demonstrate that you can hit a boule without dropping short, using a soft looping shooting method to hit a boule that is placed 40 cm behind another boule at a distance 2m past the minimum distance for your age.
  5. Demonstrate to the examiner that a candidate can promote a boule by landing in front of a boule and bring both boules to within 20 cm of the Jack at the minimum distance.
  6. To play as a double a complete game of Petanque adhering strictly to the International Rules of Petanque utilizing all the shots performed in this award. Candidates will pass this exercise providing that they have showed to the examiner that they have worked tactically as a team. This task must be completed to the satisfaction of the examiner.

Knowledge of Petanque

  1. Explain what is meant by and then give an example of when it would be appropriate to use the following terms:
    a) Trailing the Jack.
    b) Etiquette on the terrain.
  2. Inform the examiner of the answers to the following rules:
    a) What is the entitlement to move the circle back.
    b) hat happens if boules are picked up before points have been agreed.

GOLD

 

Participants should attempt all the skill activities but must achieve success and consistency. In order to pass this award, candidates must obtain a competency score of 8 out of 12 in each task.

Practical Activities

  1. Demonstrate that you can lob using the correct throwing method over a rope which is 3m above the ground landing the boule in a circle that is 1 m in diameter placed at the maximum distance. The boule must remain inside the circle in order for the boule to score.
  2. To hit the left boule where two boules are placed side by side at varying distances within the minimum and maximum distances defined for your age.
  3. To be able to point a boule with the use of spin, landing in a 5O cm diameter circle which is to the side of three boules. Then spin the boule from the left to the right to within 1m of the Jack, which is placed 2m directly behind the three boules in front of the Jack.
  4. To be able to point a boule with the use of spin, landing in a 50 cm diameter circle which is to the side of three boules. Then spin the boule from the right to the left to within 1 m of the Jack, which is placed 2m directly behind the three boules in front of the Jack.
  5. To be able to point a boule that moves the Jack back by at least 10 cm.
  6. To play as a double a complete game of Petanque adhering strictly to the International Rules of Petanque utilizing all the shots performed in this award. Candidates will pass this exercise providing that they have showed to the examiner that they have worked tactically as a team.

Knowledge of Petanque

Explain to the examiner what happens in the following circumstances:

  1. What can be removed from a piste during an end?
  2. What happens if a boule or Jack is displaced by a boule or moving object from another game?
  3. What happens if a boule or Jack is moved in the course of measuring?
  4. How far does a Jack need to be displaced in order for a Jack to be declared dead?
