Welsh Petanque Association - Beginners Skills Award Scheme

BRONZE

 

Participants will need to complete all the listed activities in order to pass. A pass will be awarded to any individual that can prove to the examiner that they can complete the tasks set out competently in a consistent manner.

Practical Activities

  1. To be able to demonstrate how to hold a boule correctly and how to find the correct sized boule out of a selection of different sized boules.
  2. To be able to demonstrate how to throw a boule with the correct grip.
  3. To be able to demonstrate how to throw a boule along a straight line without the throwing arm crossing the body during the follow-through, with the boule travelling at least 6m.
  4. To be able to demonstrate how to throw a boule with good release.

Knowledge of Petanque

Candidates should be able to explain to the examiner the following:

  1. Why is safety important when playing boule?
  2. What is the minimum and maximum size of the circle?
  3. Up to how many points is a game of Petanque played?

SILVER

 

Participants will need to complete all the activities in order to pass. A pass will be awarded by the examiner when the candidate can prove they can complete the tasks competently and in a consistent manner.

Practical Activities

  1. To be able to demonstrate how you measure the distance a boule is from the Jack correctly.
  2. To be able to demonstrate how to throw a boule with good use of backswing during the throw when pointing at the minimum starting distance for your age.
  3. To be able to demonstrate how to throw a boule with good use of backswing when attempting to shoot a boule at the minimum starting distance for your age.
  4. To be able to demonstrate how to throw a boule to a Jack at 8m with steady balance throughout the throw.

Knowledge of Petanque

  1. Explain how you score points in a game. What is meant by the following terms:
    a) pointing,
    b) shooting
  2. How many boules does each player use in a game of:
    a) singles,
    b) doubles,
    c) triples

GOLD

 

Participants will need to complete all the activities in order to pass. A pass will be awarded by the examiner when the candidate can prove they can complete the tasks competently and in a consistent manner.

Practical Activities

  1. To be able to point a boule from a squatting position towards a Jack placed at 6m stopping within 75 cm of the Jack.
  2. To be able to hit a boule without landing more than 50 cm in front of the target boule that is placed at the minimum playing distance for your age.
  3. To be able to demonstrate that you can throw a Jack to within a circle of 1 m in diameter at a distance within that laid down for your age. The examiner is responsible for ensuring that the distance at which a Jack is thrown to is varied at least 3 times.
  4. To be able to demonstrate that you can point a boule to within a circle of 70 cm in diameter whereby the examiner is responsible for ensuring that the distance at which a boule is pointed to is varied at least 3 times.
  5. To play as a double a complete game of Petanque demonstrating an understanding of the basic International Rules of Petanque.

Knowledge of Petanque

  1. Who should measure if a point/position is being contested?
  2. Explain what happens if the Jack becomes dead during an end.
  3. Explain why you should mark the positions of the boule after each boule is played.
