Red Dragon Award

Part 1:

Unlike the Green Dragon Award, the emphasis of this award is placed upon achieving a minimum score of 18 out of a maximum of 36 points. One point is awarded for each successful completion of a task.

Those taking this award must have passed the Green Dragon Award.

Candidates will need to attempt all the listed activities to pass. A pass will be awarded to a candidate scoring 6 out of 12 in each activity.

The examiner will be an independent, qualified WPA coach who is not involved in the mentoring or coaching of the candidates.

Activities to be completed

  1. Demonstrate to the examiner that a candidate can promote a boule by landing no more than 50cm in front of a target boule and bring the target boule to within a 50cm radius circle around the jack placed at 7m from the throwing circle.
  2. Point a boule from a squatting position to within 50 cm of a jack placed at 7m from the throwing circle.
  3. Complete a competition scorecard and enter results onto a league sheet.
  4. To play a game of doubles adhering to the Rules of Petanque utilising all the shots performed in this award. Candidates will pass this exercise, providing that they have shown to the examiner that they have worked together as a team. This task must be completed to the satisfaction of the examiner.

While performing the above tasks, the examiner will record the stance, which forms part of the assessment.

Understanding

Candidates should be able to prove an understanding to the examiner of the following:

Explain to the examiner what is meant by and then give an example of when it would be appropriate to use the following:

  • Trailing the jack.
  • Promoting a boule.
  • Lobbing a boule.
  • Discuss etiquette on the terrain and give examples of good and bad etiquette.

Candidates will need to attempt all the listed activities to pass. A pass will be awarded to a candidate scoring 6 out of 12 in each activity.

Activities to be completed

  1. Demonstrate to the examiner that the candidate can lob a boule over a rope/bar positioned at least 3m above the ground consistently into a circle 2m in diameter placed with its front edge at 6m from the throwing circle. The front edge is closest to the throwing circle.
  2. Demonstrate to the examiner that a candidate can hit a boule without dropping short, using a soft looping shooting method to hit the target 50 cm behind another boule at 6m from the throwing circle. The target boule should be 6.5m, and the obstructing boule 6m from the throwing circle.
  3. Using the third discipline of the Precision Shooting Competition, the candidate must hit the middle boule out of the three positioned side by side with a gap of 10 cm between each. The boules will be placed 6m, 7m and 8m from the circle.

While performing the above tasks, the examiner will record the stance, which forms part of the assessment.

Understanding

Candidates should be able to prove an understanding to the examiner of the following:

  • Answer to the following rules:-
    • Entitlement to move the circle back.
    • What is the minimum distance required for a jack,
      • when thrown at the start of an end,
      • From the dead boule lines at the side of the lanes?
    • What is a timed game, and explain when this is used in a competition.
