WPA Implements New Selection Process to Strengthen National Squads and Boost International Competition

The Welsh Petanque Association (WPA) has announced a new initiative to raise players’ competitive standards within its national squads, ensuring that players are consistently challenged to prove their worth. This initiative is designed to improve the overall skill level of Welsh Petanque, both nationally and internationally, and create a more competitive environment for players vying for spots on European and World Championship teams.

The core goal of this new approach is to cultivate a continuous flow of high-level talent, gradually improving the quality of players in the WPA’s representative teams.

According to the WPA, the change’s underlying philosophy is simple: players must earn their place in the squad over time, demonstrating consistent improvement and performance. Rather than offering shortcuts to selection, the WPA’s approach focuses on sustained development, ensuring that players prove they deserve to be in the team based on long-term commitment and skill progression.

By prioritising long-term player development and performance, the WPA hopes to create an environment where players constantly strive to improve and challenge themselves.

The following members have been selected to enter this new process:

Ian Bailey, Cara Bestow, Jayne Dunn, Len Field, Roger Green, Richard Harris, Cai Jones, Kimberley Jeffrey, David Languerand, Steven Love, Tansy Mayfield, David Paine, Kate Price, Andrew Rios-Hall & Sean Smith.

It is not too late for additional women members to apply to become part of this exciting process.
