WPA to Host Second Annual International Women’s Day Petanque Event.

Caerleon, Wales – Saturday, March 8, 2025

IWD 2024 hosted by Monkstone Petanque Club.

The Welsh Pétanque Association (WPA) is set to host its second annual International Women’s Day (IWD) event, continuing a celebration that brings together women across Wales for a day of sport, camaraderie, and empowerment. The event will take place at the Caerleon RFC Pétanque Club, with support from Ruth Long, Secretary to Caerleon Pétanque, and Jayne Dunn, WPA Volunteer Organiser.

This year’s event falls under the global theme of “Accelerate Action,” aligning with the push to amplify gender equality and empower women worldwide. Participants will be able to discover upcoming pétanque events happening throughout 2025, showcasing the growing interest and community within the sport.

With 40 available spots for WPA members and non-members, organizers encourage all interested players to sign up and be part of this exciting day. The £5 entry fee will go toward prizes and a donation to Cyfannol Women’s Aid, a charitable organization supporting women in Gwent.

“International Women’s Day is an excellent opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements and encourage more participation in pétanque, especially in an inclusive and welcoming environment,” said Ruth Long. “We’re proud to host this event again and support such a fantastic cause.”

Participants are invited to wear green, purple, and white, traditionally associated with IWD, as a sign of solidarity and celebration. The event will follow a melee format, with players signing up individually. The day will consist of two games in the morning, a break for lunch, and one more game in the afternoon.

In addition to the game time, attendees can enjoy tea and coffee for £1 throughout the day, with light refreshments available after the games. A coffee shop adjacent to the playing area will also sell sandwiches and drinks for those interested.

To register for the event, participants can email Ruth Long or join the IWD 2025 WhatsApp Group for more details. Organisers also thank Caerleon RFC Pétanque Club for generously providing their venue for this year’s event.

“We’re grateful for the continued support of our community, and we hope to see many new faces come out and join us in celebrating this important day,” added Jayne Dunn.

As the WPA works to grow the sport of pétanque in Wales, the International Women’s Day event stands as a shining example of how sport can foster unity and empowerment. For more information and to secure a spot in the event, please reach out through the provided contact details.
