8 June, 2025 – City of Llandaff Petanque Club
The 2025 Peter Westall Cup brought together 20 top-tier doubles teams from across Wales for a thrilling day of pétanque action.
All 20 teams played three randomly assigned rounds in the qualification phase during the morning session. Points and wins determined the ranking from 1st to 20th, setting the stage for the next phase of the competition.
John Legge and Phil Bradshaw led the standings in commanding fashion, going undefeated with three wins and earning 24 points to secure the top seed. Close behind were Richard Harris and Tansy Mayfield (3 wins, 18 points), followed by Nigel Tidball and Paul Jeremy (3 wins, 12 points), and Sean Smith with Garry Griffiths (3 wins, 12 points), rounding out the top four.
The top 8 teams advanced to the Peter Westall Cup knockout competition, which kicked off with high-stakes quarterfinals leading up to the final match.
Teams ranked 9th to 16th entered the Silver competition, a knockout contest that mirrored the format of the main event and offered a second chance for glory.
Finally, the bottom four teams moved into the Bronze competition, beginning directly with semi-finals, followed by the final.
Below is the final ranking for the 20 teams:
The final results of the qualification round highlighted some unexpected results, with several teams failing to make it into the top eight. Len Field and Jean-Yves Robic (Vale PC) could only manage one win, 2 points, leaving them in 10th position. However, the biggest surprise was last year’s pairing of John Attfield and Stewart Spencer (Pontyclun PC), who won the trophy but only managed one win, -8 points, giving them 14th place.
The 2025 Peter Westall Cup concluded dramatically with the winners crowned in the Peter Westall Cup, Silver and Bronze competitions: each final delivered excitement, high-level play, and standout performances from all competitors.
Peter Westall Cup:
John Legge and Phil Bradshaw (Greenlawns PC) were unstoppable in the Peter Westall Cup, powering through each round with commanding performances. After defeating Janice Lee and Simone Ballett (Vale PC) 13–2 in the quarter-finals and narrowly edging past Dave Paine and Kate Price 13–12 (Vale PC) in the semis, they met Richard Harris and Tansy Mayfield (Caerleon RFC PC) in the final. Legge and Bradshaw prevailed 13–5 with confident shot-making and teamwork to earn the Peter Westall Cup.
Silver Cup:
The Silver Cup was a showcase of brilliance by Jean-Yves Robic and Len Field (Vale PC), who were in top form throughout the competition. After a clean 13–0 win in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals, they faced a strong Bernard and Vicie Adshead (Monkstone PC) pairing in the final. Robic and Field maintained their dominant streak, winning 13–4 to secure the top spot.
Bronze Cup:
In a tightly contested Bronze Cup, Pat McCarthy and Celia Scott (Vale PC) showcased their skills and composure to claim the win. After dispatching Kym Jeffrey and George Hill 13–10 (Tywn y Ffrwd PC) in the semi-final, they faced Elijah Jeffers and Joe Williams (Monkstone PC/Vale PC) in the final.
