Women’s National Singles Championship Returns

The Women’s National Singles Championship returned for the first time since 2018, hosted at the Cardiff Harlequins Petanque Club. The long-anticipated event brought together players from WPA-affiliated clubs, including Caerleon RFC PC, Monkstone PC, Twyn-y-Ffrwd PC, and the Vale PC.

The morning session featured three qualifying rounds, where standout performances were delivered by Gill Clark (Monkstone PC), Kym Jeffreys (Twyn-y-Ffrwd PC), and Kate Price (Vale PC), each securing three wins. Their consistent play earned them prime spots in the tournament’s knockout stage.

Due to the limited number of entries, the competition structure required eliminating the teams finishing in 9th and 10th place following the qualifiers.

The top eight players vied for the coveted national title as the tournament progressed into the afternoon. In the upper half of the draw, Gill Clark maintained her winning momentum to set up a semi-final clash with seasoned competitor Tansy Mayfield. Gill advanced with a decisive 13-6 win.

Meanwhile, in the lower half, Kate Price overcame experienced opponent Jayne Dunn to secure her semi-final place. Kym Jeffreys narrowly edged past Sonia Ford in a nail-biting 13-12 match to round out the final four.

The semi-finals saw Gill Clark and Kate Price dominate their matches, with Gill winning 13-6 and Kate securing a 13-5 victory. The final brought together the day’s two undefeated players in a fitting climax to the championship. Only one could emerge victorious to claim the title.

The final saw two equally matched players in a closely fought final, with each player taking the lead during the encounter. However, Kate Price finally had the opportunity and won the match and the 2025 Championship Title, 13/9.

Congratulations to both finalists.
