Report: President Novice Cup 2026

New Talent Shines: 2026 WPA President’s Novice Cup
The Welsh Pétanque Association (WPA) returned to the pistes of the Monkstone Petanque Club for one of the first events on the calendar: the President’s Novice Cup. Designed specifically for those who play socially or in the early stages of their pétanque journey, the event proved once again that the popularity of the sport in Wales continues to shine. With a focus on camaraderie over cut-throat competition, the day offered many players their first taste of a formal event structure with the volunteers and supporters encouraging them on.

The 2026 event saw a field of 10 teams representing clubs from across the South Wales region, including Llanelli, Mumbles and Abergavenny. The format—a relaxed series of timed rounds—ensured that the atmosphere remained encouraging.

For many, the highlight wasn’t just the score-lines, but the opportunity to learn about tournament play, such as formal measuring and the use of the “extra ends” rule.

The Podium Finishers (all with 3 wins)
• Champions: Paul Hawkins, Sheila Littleboy, Huw Llewellyn (Monkstone PC)
• Runners-Up: Jane Stahl, Angela Awater, Peter Allsop (Caerlon PC/Abergavenny PC)
• Third Place: Gaynor Rees, Tracy Anstee, Isabell Griffin (Mumbles PC)

The Novice category was started a number of years ago to help “de-mystify” competitive pétanque. By providing a low-pressure environment, the Novice Cup acts as a vital bridge between social club play and National-level leagues.
“It’s not just about winning the cup,” noted one participant. “It’s about realising that the pétanque community is welcoming and that we all started as novices once.”

Our thanks to the WPA Committee members who ran the event, Monkstone Petanque Club for hosting and the volunteers/spectators who came to support.
