The two-day Celtic Challenge Qualifier recently held at Caerleon RFC PC in less than ideal weather conditions tested the eleven teams that entered to achieve one of the four places available to represent Wales in the 2025 Celtic Challenge to be hosted by the Scottish Petanque Association at Macduff Petanque Club.
After eleven rounds of intense competition, four teams highlighted in green won their places to represent Wales. A special mention must go to the team of Derek Jones, John Attfield, Ken Aston & Len Field, who won nine of their ten games together, only to fail in their final game to achieve a clean sweep. The third-place position came down to the final winning encounter for Darren Hardwicke, Didier Mack, Joe Williams & Dan Rawlings.
Fourth place was also decided in the final round of the encounter between Sean Smith’s and Bernard Adshead’s teams. Losing 13/5 placed them in fifth position, finishing as the first reserve team. However, they would have taken fourth place if Bernard’s team had achieved an extra point.
The fourth-placed team of Richard Harris, Barbara Vaughan, Kon Tomczyk & Jack Harris requires a special mention as Jack Harris will be the youngest WPA member to represent Wales at the Celtic Challenge Championship – well Done, Jack.
