The 2025 Welsh Cup began dramatically with fierce competition in both groups. Caerleon RFC PC and Vale PC emerged as leaders after two qualifying rounds, delivering commanding performances in Group 1 and Group 2, respectively.
Group 1: Day 1 -Saturday
The opening encounter was between the City of Llandaff PC (COL) and the Twyn-y-Ffwrd PC (TYF). The COL took an early lead by winning 4 out of the six singles matches, leaving the TYF a real battle on their hands. The results of the doubles change the balance, with the TYF winning two of the three matches. This left the encounter on a knife’s edge, as COL needed to win both triple matches, while TYF only required one to take the encounter. The results were one game each, resulting in the TYF winning 18/13 on game points.
The second encounter of the day saw last year’s Welsh Cup Champions, Caerleon RFC PC (CRFC), take on Twyn-y-Ffwrd PC (TYF). After the first round of singles, the scores were even, each club winning three games each. However, CRFC stepped up a gear by winning the three doubles matches, giving them the advantage in the final round of triples. Again, for TYF to win the encounter and seal their place in the final, they had to win both triples and gain the full 10 match points. However, CRFC only needed the one win, which they did and won the encounter 20/11 on game points.
Day 2 -Sunday
The final encounter of Group 1 saw Caerleon RFC PC (CRFC) square up against Llandaff PC (COL). The opening singles round saw CRFC win four out of the six singles matches, leaving COL a difficult task if they were to win the encounter.
Unfortunately, the CRFC took all three doubles matches to win the encounter 17/4.
Group 1 Overview
Caerleon RFC PC tops Group 1 with a perfect record, winning both matches. They scored 14 game points against their opponents’ 6 and achieved a strong points difference of +82. Their total score of 242–160 shows their dominance across all disciplines.
Twyn-y-Ffrwd PC sits second with 1 win and 1 loss. Despite a points difference of -15, they remain competitive with 10 wins and 211 points scored. City of Llandaff PC struggled in the opening rounds, sitting at the bottom with two losses and a -67 point difference.

Group 2: Day 1 -Saturday
The opening encounter of Group 2 saw the Monkstone PC (MPC) take on the Cardiff Harlequins PC (CH). MPC took an early lead by winning 4 of the singles matches. MPC continued to stay in front by winning 2 out of the three doubles, which meant that MPC only required one of the triples to win, while CH required both of the triple matches. Unfortunately, MPC dominated the triples and won both matches, giving them a 24/7 lead on match points.
The second encounter of the day saw the Cardiff Harlequins PC (CH) take on the Vale PC (VPC), formerly the SWBRC PS, which was the runners-up in 2024. The VPC arrived with a clear game plan and blew CH away, winning the encounter 31/0.
Day 2 -Sunday
Group 2’s final encounter was between the Vale PC (VPC) and the Monkstone PC (MPC). Could the MPC upset VPC’s game plan and win the final encounter?
VPC again started strongly, winning the six singles matches, giving them a strong lead. MPC could only manage to win one doubles match, which meant even if MPC won both triple matches, they could not win the encounter. The triples finished with one win each, giving the VPC the win 23/8 on game points.
Group 2 Highlights
Vale PC proved to be a formidable team in Group 2, winning both matches with an impressive 20–2 game point record and a +121 point differential. Their attacking style and solid defence led to the highest points scored across all teams, +269.
Monkstone PC secured one win and one loss, finishing with a +13 points difference and 217 points scored. Cardiff Harlequins, despite their spirited effort, failed to secure a win and currently sit third in the group, having conceded 271 points across two matches.

Welsh Cup Final
Vale PC delivered a commanding performance in the 2025 Welsh Cup Final, clinching the title with a decisive win over Caerleon RFC PC. The final score saw Vale PC triumph 17 game points to 4, with an emphatic 35-point margin that left no doubt about their superiority on the day.
The competition featured a full slate of singles, doubles, and triples matches. Vale PC secured victory, demonstrating depth and consistency across all formats of play. Their dominance was particularly evident in the singles and doubles, where they consistently outmanoeuvred their opponents both tactically and technically.
Caerleon RFC PC managed to win just two games, and despite spirited individual performances, they struggled to find the rhythm needed to overturn Vale’s momentum.
This result not only showcases Vale PC’s skill and teamwork but also adds another prestigious trophy to their cabinet. With this win, they set a high bar for next year’s competition.
