League Competition Reaches Its Final Week

The league competition reaches its conclusion this week with the final round of games being played on Wednesday. Some of the champions and promotion & relegation issue have been resolved already but others will go right down to the wire.

Division 1:  Monkstone Monarchs are already Champions retaining the title they won last year. The Runner Up spot could still go to any one of three teams – Wheatsheaf, who have played all their matches so can only sit and wait, Isca Romans or Wenvoe Warriors. Isca Romans are at home to Champions Monkstone Monarchs whilst Wenvoe Warriors are away to Monkstone Inn Un.

With Pontyclun Badgers already relegated, the second relegation spot will go to either Monkstone Minotaurs or Monkstone Inn Un. The Minotaurs have a home fixture against the relegated Badgers and Monkstone Inn are at home to Wenvoe Warriors in a match that could affect placings at the bottom and the top of the table.

Division 2:  The top two places are already decided – Wenvoe Raiders & Penarth Pendragons – but who will be Champions and who will be Runners Up as both teams are equal on 25 points? The Raiders must be favourites to take the title holding a one game advantage and with, on paper at least, the easiest fixture, Monkstone Inn Youth at home, whilst the Pendragons also have a home match but against mid-table Creigiau Jacques.

The relegation issues are already decided with Monkstone Inn Youth & Monkstone Musketeers taking the drop into the third division.

Division 3:  Newly formed club Maesteg are worthy Champions of this division particularly as they have played the whole season with a squad of only four players – one of them a junior and another, Len Field, having to play left-handed for the last few games following a serious injury to his right hand. Caerleon Celts who reformed as a team this season are the Runners Up and will join Maesteg in the second division next season.

The wooden spoon is still very much up for grabs and could go to any one of Cwins, Penarth Panthers and Monkstone Mystics.
